Pastor Letter

Letters from Home | Pottsville Associate Reformed Presbyterian ChurchDear Starmount Family,

My Thanksgiving morning has been full of memories that we have experienced together over the years. Watching God do wonderful things among us has been an overwhelming joy. I am so thankful for God giving me the opportunity to be a pastor in the midst of you, for watching you grow in the Lord, for strengthening our relationships and love for one another, for watching Starmount grow into a beautiful cross-cultural community of believers, for God bringing resources and mature leadership to guide Starmount forward, for your love to Susan and I, and especially your patience, forgiveness and love for me as I continue to learn how to be a better pastor. As we gather around our tables, may joyful thanksgiving from our God of peace rest upon you and your families.

To those who are experiencing illness and isolation due to the pandemic, know that our hearts and prayers are with you. May the Lord shower on you a spirit of love, peace, and the joy of His comfort and presence. And may healing come soon!

As we begin the Advent Season, let us all look to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with Thanksgiving and praise! May He fill our hearts with the joy of our deliverance!

For the LORD comforts Zion; he comforts all her waste places and makes her wilderness like Eden, her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the voice of song. (Isa 51:3 ESV)

God Bless You All,
Pastor Anthony

COVID Update December 21, 2020

To all our family and friends in Starmount Church and the Starmount neighborhood,

The latest North Carolina Executive Order 181 is in effect until January 8. Additional controls include a modified stay at home order from 10pm until 5am; nighttime closure for certain business and activities; and requires face coverings in all public indoor settings where non-household members are present.

This change does not affect our indoor worship services, but does encourage everyone to continue to practice safety precautions, especially when attending indoor gatherings.

With the recent approval of a vaccine, mass distribution will begin by end of year. Please continue to pray for God to end the virus.

In keeping with our desire to connect with our Starmount family and neighborhood according to the current restrictions, please be reminded of events that have been scheduled as follows:

Churchwide Events
December 24th – Please join us for a Candlelight Service in the sanctuary at 6pm for a joyful time of worship, singing through the Christmas Story and encouraging fellowship!

The threat of Covid-19 remains and the Starmount leadership are committed to minimizing the risk of coronavirus spread in our worship services. In light of the increasing number of cases and for everyone to feel comfortable in our indoor worship services, please be reminded of the need to wear masks during the entire worship service. Your sensitivities in this area would be greatly appreciated.

For the most vulnerable members of the congregation and community, we still offer the option to participate in worship through watching the livestream on the Starmount Church Facebook site. Also, our Sunday morning service may be heard live over the radio on 88.1 FM in the church parking lot, so any members or visitors interested in hearing the service from their vehicles may park and listen.

Please consider participating in our continuing ZOOM prayer meetings and Bible studies:
Portuguese Prayer Meeting: Tuesday and Thursday at 8:00pm (Will re-start in January)
Thursday Bible Study at 7:00pm (Jack Blake). Last ZOOM meeting for the year is December 17th.
English Prayer Meeting: Wednesday at 7:00pm (Will re-start in January)

Advent Season – Week 5 Christ Candle
On the fifth week, the white center candle is called the “Christ Candle” and represents the life of Christ that has come into the world. The color white represents purity. Christ is the sinless, spotless, pure Savior. Those who receive Christ as Savior are washed of their sins and made whiter than snow.

Luke 2:1-7 – In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.  This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria.  And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.  And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in waddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

Matthew 1:23 – “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).

Merry Christmas!

Grace and Peace to all – Starmount Church Pastoral Staff

A cor branca representa pureza. Cristo é o Salvador imaculado, imaculado e puro.

Feliz Natal!

God’s Great Story of Hope

Starting May 12, we begin a new series on the greatest story ever written – “God’s Great Story of Hope”. We live in a country with people from many backgrounds and cultures. Many have been taught different versions of this great story. As with most great stories that remain in focus for thousands of years, it can be hard to stay aligned with the original intent of the author and we can lose its impact on our lives. When this happens, it becomes necessary to go back to the original source of the story and hit the “reset” button for a better understanding.

The intent of this new series is to hit the “reset” button on God’s Great story of Hope by going back to its source, the Bible for a fresh understanding of this impact on our lives.

Assurance of God’s Love

Join us for our sermon series on the book of First John entitled “Assurance of God’s Love”. The apostle John warns us of false teaching that attempts to draw people away from the truth of the Gospel, spreading the disease of unbelief by denying that Jesus Christ came in the flesh. The antidote for this false teaching is founded upon the truth in God’s word which declares that Jesus Christ is God’s Son who came in the flesh to rescue people from their sins. Through vivid comparisons of light versus darkness, truth versus error, love versus hate, Christians are called to know the truth of the Gospel, love one another, and abide in God. Rather than succumb to the ungodly desires of the world, God’s people are to overcome the world through their relationship with Jesus Christ who is greater than those who deny him.

All of this springs from God who first loved us: “God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.” This “Assurance of God’s Love” breeds confidence in those who believe in the name of the Son of God – that they may love one another and know they have eternal life.
